B.196. I was stationed at Ma Tau Chung internment camp
on 29.11.39.
I was on duty at No.5 observation post between
10 a.m. & 2 p.m. My post is in direct line with No.6 post. At
about 11.55 a.m., I saw an internee sitting not far from the
wire on vegetable ground. He remained there for some minutes.
Then I saw him get up and go into the barbed wire by No.6

post. I saw him lift up the barbed wire and crawled under the
fence. I shouted to him come back: don't run. He paid no
attention to me. On reaching the outer fence, he started to
climb up.
I gave the alarm on my whistle. He continued to
climb up.
When he gripped the upper part of the wire, I fired
my Greener gun but apparently I missed. So I loaded and fired
again, but he carried on. So I tried to load my gun again.
At this time, I saw a European Sergeant 165, who also
fired. He fired at the man just beyond the wire. He fired
while walking. I only heard him fire once. The man on the
fence collapsed and fell back into the wire.

I saw Sergeant ROTHWELL there holding a pistol just beyond
No.6 post outside the wire. The man was then on top of the
fence.
